Skill: character analysis
Keep students revved up about independent reading with this book-sharing celebration. When a student finishes a book, have her write to describe the main character’s actions and create a paper plate mask of the character. Also have her decorate a sheet of construction paper to resemble the book’s cover and glue her writing to the picture’s back. Periodically invite students to put on their masks. Then read one description aloud at a time and challenge the class to match the book cover with its character.
